The best golfers in the world arrive in Wales for a huge event and a Welsh test like no other

The big canons of World Golf are looking forward to testing on the coast of Porthcawl while the Open of Women Aig arrives in Wales for the first time.

The biggest female sporting event never organized in Wales will see the World N ° 1 Nelly Korda, title champion Lydia Ko and the favorite of bookmakers Lottie Woad Teeing It Up in the last Golf Major of the season.

“New week, new golf course, new conditions,” was the verdict of the American Korda, the current world n ° 1.

“The first four holes are magnificent. The views of the golf course are absolutely breathtaking, but you can certainly say that, when the wind resumes here, it will be a very difficult test.

“It’s really pretty. I think it all depends on the wind and the time we get, like a kind of each open championship. I think it will be an excellent test.

“Our first tournament hole with this view with water in the background, a sort of blind tee in a direction, it looks like the end of the world there.

“I have the impression that it may be a little more demanding of the T-shirt, compared to other links, you can hit the pilot and there are bunkers on the way, but here, you can certainly hit the pilot.

“Once you are in one of these bunkers, as in all golf courses, it’s just a launch. So it will be very demanding of the T-shirt and make sure you are in good places in the Greens.”

England Lottie Woad experienced a few incredible weeks, winning the KPMG Open Irish Women and finishing a blow behind the Evian championship, then winning the female Open of Isps Handa during its first event after having become a professional.

Its superb shape meant that the former Welsh women’s open amateur champion was installed as a favorite of bookmakers.

“I think it will be a very good test,” said the 21 -year -old. “The weather is always a factor in golf links. Lots of holes, the PAR is a good score, then you really have to try your luck on the par-5.

“I played the course about a month ago, it’s nice to see the starting lines before arriving here. There are a few holes that are a little blind. You are targeting the throat and you don’t think it’s true, but it’s actually the right line.

“It’s good to know that before the training tour. Although it was a little softer when I played it, but not too different.”

The New Zealander Ko is the defending champion after winning the last year of St Andrew and will play the first two laps alongside Woad in a star group.

“This is my first time in Wales. I’m just trying to get used to it here and learning culture a bit, but it was fun, “she said.

“The only thing I knew outside the flag was that there were words that had very few vowels, a few words that look like a bunch of consonants. It could be one of the most difficult languages that I have ever heard.

“I have heard that there are a lot of sheep here in Wales, and that is why New Zealand is very well known. So it’s a bit like my home. People were very welcoming and kind. I was not fully exposed to this Welsh culture, but I love it.

“I think it is the biggest female sporting event in Wales. I hope it attracts a lot of crowds here. I think the last time there was a championship here was for the male senior open, and I heard that the weather was quite brutal. I hope that with more pleasant weather in forecasts, we have tons of spectators.

“I think it’s probably one of the best things about this event, people who come out normally and participate like the game and so passionate. Whether it’s raining or blowing 30 miles on time, they are there with us. I hope that with the first time, it would draw a lot of attention.

“But I would prefer that it is difficult to be calm. As much as I like the sunny time, when I come to play female open, I expect it to be rainy, windy, and that’s what I really enjoyed in this championship.”
