Sport England to meet the RFL on the concerns of funding the Rugby League at stake

Sport England will meet Rugby Football League in the coming weeks to express its concerns concerning the developments of the director organ. This is a decision that could affect the financial prospects of sport.

The rugby league is one of the many sports upon receipt of millions of Sport England financing books each year. This is essential to the existence of sport and is particularly important for RFL, with continuous membership of the essential sports code governance to maintain it.

The RFL has been examined in recent months with its former director general Nigel Wood returning to the organization, initially as an acting president after the resignation of Simon Johnson in March.

Wood was appointed by clubs to carry out a strategic examination of the professional game, which recommended the Super League extending to 14 teams from 2026. This was approved by the clubs at a meeting in Leeds on Monday, two weeks from the interim position of Wood as a permanent chair.

The code details all the key leadership key appointments – such as the president of the director organ – must follow the recruitment processes deemed “open and transparent” by Sport England. The meetings are provided in light of the installation of Wood as a permanent chair.

Tony Sutton, CEO of the RFL, said: “RFL works with Sport England on a governance action plan, after the resignations of the board of directors earlier in the year. The new RFL board of directors remains totally determined to work at full compliance with the Code of Sports Sports Governance England. ”

Wood’s return was considered by many to be controversial. He left his role as chief executive in 2018 and received a starting package at more than £ 300,000. He has since occupied the role of president of Bradford Bulls, a role he has given up to return to the RFL, although he remains a shareholder of the championship club. However, these same clubs now believe that he is the best individual for the overhaul of the professional game, led by an expansion of Super League at 14 teams.

The Guardian revealed Wednesday how Sky Sports were looking for the Super League answers on the decision to extend the competition. RFL was approached for comments.
